A Messy, Beautiful Story: Pay it Forward, #MCStrong

source
About a week ago there was a bad car accident in the wee hours of the morning in my hometown.  A drunk driver runs a red light, t-bones car, college kids in t-boned car hurt very bad, drunk driver walks away.

Man. I hate that.

I hate that it happened.  I hate that people are hurt.  I hate that those college kid's parents got that phone call in the middle of the night, the one that every parent fears.  And if I'm honest, I hate it because it isn't fair.  If someone was going to get hurt it should've been the drunk driver, not the college kids who had a designated driver.  They were doing the right thing, why should they get the worst of it?

But life isn't fair.

The passenger in the vehicle hit by the drunk driver had a severe head injury.  After putting up a tremendous fight, the 22 year old passenger, Michael Collins, passed away 5 days later.

Tragic.  Senseless.  Heartbreaking.

During the 5 days he was in the hospital I began to learn about Michael.  Ends up he's a really good kid. Described as kind, witty, lover of life, natural leader, and very faithful.  He was a baseball player and loved the game.  Played for Heartland Community College and was now assisting his dad who coached a high school baseball team as he finished up his degree.  He was a strong Christian, his parents were very proud of his faith in God and relationship with the Lord.  Although I didn't know him, it's apparent that he was a great person who touched a lot of lives during his short time here.

This may not seem like a special story.  Unfortunately, great people are killed by drunk drivers all too often.

But, something beautiful came out of this mess.

Michael was an organ donor.  His organ and tissue donation will help around 200 people.  He will save some lives and help people to have a better quality of life with his donation.

But that's not all.  One of Michael's friends set up a Facebook page to help keep Michael's legacy of giving and kindness alive.  She wants to "honor Michael and his giving nature by sharing and conducting random acts of kindness in his name". Pay it Forward for Michael Collins, #MCStrong was born.  Since then, the Facebook page is blowing up with people sharing how they've paid it forward for Michael.
To be handed out with cab fare certificates at downtown pubs.
People in the community and now all over the country are doing random acts of kindness in honor of Michael.  Small thoughtful things like paying a parking meter for a stranger (a big deal in a college town), taping an envelope of cash on their garbage can to pay for lunch for their garbage man, and paying for the person behind them in line for fast food or coffee.

Goody bags with Michael's picture and story
There have also been some very large donations in Michael's name to great causes.  As #MCStrong spreads, a woman from Michael's town who now lives in Australia is donating $5 for every minute it takes her to complete an upcoming triathalon.  This amount will be donated to a children's hospital in Sydney, Australia in Michael's name.  Michael's legacy is stretching half-way around the world.

Michael's story reminds me to never take my loved one's for granted.  And despite all of the bad things I see on the news everyday, most people are good.  From this mess of a drunk driving, deadly car accident a beautiful outpouring of kindness and love has occurred.  What a blessing for Michael's family to witness during what will likely be the most difficult time in their lives.

It is my hope in sharing Michael's story that you would be moved to pay it forward with a random act of kindness.

I will.

Client Living Room Makeover Reveal

Hey friends!  Thanks for all the great feedback about my client kitchen remodel.  I hope you'll like the living room makeover too.

As you can see from the picture above, my clients had a good sized family room with a huge window, but it seemed dark and crowded.  They wanted to make better use of the space and update the decor so that it would flow from their newly remodeled kitchen.

The living room was not remodeled.  It did get the beautiful wide-planked wood floors like the kitchen and some new paint.  The main thing in here was new furniture and decor.

They wanted a big comfy sectional, so we started with that.  The walls are a very pale green so that was the main accent color.  We used plantation shutters to keep the room light and bright when they want it to be. They can shut out the sun in the summer when they get some really strong sun light (and heat) through the large windows in the afternoon.

Behind the sectional there was kind of an odd space between the back of the sectional and the half wall to the kitchen.  We filled it with this...

I am so in love with that chest of drawers and mirror.  The color of the chest is green with hints of turquoise and is so perfect for the room.  It was a great way to add an understated splash of color.

I don't usually suggest putting a tv over a fireplace, just my personal design preference.  But, Mr. Client had his heart set on the tv over the fireplace.  Because the tv is so large, this was a good place for it in this room. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  In this home, it worked.

I would have liked to add a more colorful rug in here but they ordered this without me.  Luckily, it works just great!  It's an indoor/outdoor rug so it doesn't stain easily.  This is always good for a family with small children and pets.  Plus, they are usually quite a bit less expensive than a regular indoor rug.

A shot of the seating area across from the sectional.

And here's a shot of the whole room... I think we succeeded in brightening it up!

Client Kitchen Remodel Reveal

Hey there!  How's it goin'?  Can you believe it's April already!?  We've had such a cold spring that it's hard to believe it.  I have a lot of projects around my house that I can't wait to share with you but the weather has just been too crummy to take pictures, ugh.  But, that means it's the perfect time to share a client's home that I photographed on a sunny day.  And, this is absolutely one of my favorite jobs...

So when this client called me and told me her address I thought, man.... that is familiar.  When I pulled up to the house I realized it was a boy I dated in high schools old house.  I had sped over to this house many a times in my cool Z-24 wearing an over-sized flannel shirt, baggy jeans, and some Doc Martins listening to Pearl Jam on my discman which had this attachment I could plug into my tape deck.  (oh man I was soooo cool)  This was when the house was new, back in the 90's.  My town is not small, about 120,000 people so this was a really random coincidence.

After I stopped having high school flashbacks I realized, whoa, it had changed a lot since I'd been there.  I remember that all the walls were painted cream and all the woodwork and cabinetry were oak back in the day... so totally 90's.

It had since been painted and wallpapered.  My client was over it.   They  remodeled their downstairs to make better use of the space and modernize their decor.  The floor plan went from this:

To this:

Please excuse my very sad graphics but hopefully you get the idea.

They had a formal living room that they never used and a dining room that they rarely used.  Like most of us, the kitchen is the heart of their home.  They just about doubled the space of their kitchen by knocking down the wall to the dining room and opening up the space.  Pure genius.

Here is a better shot of the kitchen before.
You can see on the left behind the fridge that their pantry door is open but behind it is the entry to the dining room where you can sort of see the 90's wallpaper.  Here it is...

By knocking down the wall between the dining room and kitchen they were able to add a huge island and decided to attach their kitchen table to it.

I love these cool pendants, they were perfect for the space since the ceilings aren't very high.  The island is topped with black granite, a nice change from the rest of the counters.  And, everyone should have a wine fridge don't ya think?

I absolutely love this farmhouse apron sink.

The newly placed windows over the newly placed sink really let the light in.  It was hard to photograph because it was so bright, hopefully you'll get the idea.  Check out all the cabinets...

I love me some white cabinets with subway tile.  The granite has green undertones and the walls are painted a very pale shade of green.

Love pretty apothecary jars in a kitchen.

The coolest part of this job was that I became friends with the client.  I also helped her makeover her living room that is open to the kitchen.  Although we didn't knock down any walls it is a huge makeover.
